The Anti-Cookbook inverts the idea that cooking is simply about following a recipe. A “cookbook” method of completing a task implies a mundane, thoughtless process. This book seeks to do the opposite — to inspire readers to think creatively about making meals and independently about the deeper issues surrounding food and nourishment. We want readers to see the sweetness of committing to themselves, to locally sourced ingredients and wholesome recipes, to sitting down to a homemade meal instead of dialing one up or paying someone else to cut the broccoli. If you have found yourself too often eating out of a bag or ordering up take-out, indulge yourself with our food-positive philosophy. Cook better, eat right, be well.

Review

The Anti-Cookbook is a great treatise on cooking even from my point of view as a chef. Shelley and Rebecca provide common sense advice for managing the day-to-day challenges of providing good, wholesome, healthy and ethical food for today's busy families. Their no-nonsense approach to cooking makes their book the perfect guide for our children as they leave the nest. --Frank Stitt, Highlands Bar & Grill, Bottega, and Chez Fonfon, author of Frank Stitt's Southern Table: Recipes and Gracious Traditions from Highlands Bar & Grill and Bottega Favorita: A Southern Chef's Love Affair with Italian Food

In my first year fending for myself in the real world, learning how to procure quality meals while not breaking the bank has been a process. We're surrounded by endless options and an abundance of nutrition plans and food philosophies and it often seems more convenient to just eat out or order food for delivery. With entertaining personal commentary, The Anti-Cookbook boils it down to simple, timeless recipes that make learning how to prepare real home-cooked food feasible for any busy young professional trying to eat well for a reasonable price. --Olivia Nicholls, Technology Marketing Associate

Shelley and Rebecca share their wisdom for living fully and that includes fantastic food ideas! The Anti-Cookbook not only offers any young person starting out a foundation for living well in today's hurried world, but also strips away the often confining and intimidating process of eating well.the authors share their heart-filled stories and provide the readers with valuable and important information about how to care for the world by respectfully choosing how and what we eat. --Yvonne Tally, author of Breaking Up with Busy, Real-Life Solutions for Overscheduled Women and co-founder of Poised, Inc.

A veterinarian and a lawyer-turned-writer walk into a kitchen…We aren’t chefs and that’s exactly the point. Most people who feed themselves and their families every day aren’t chefs. We each bring our unique, experienced take on fashioning and balancing a life—replete with parental responsibilities and challenges. We met in college, moved into our first apartment together and began to figure all of this out. We went our separate ways and each amassed diverse experiences that have brought us back together. At fifty, we have a lot to share with our own young-adult children and you and yours as well.

Betty Crocker's granddaughter probably has this cookbook...
My college-aged daughter received this book as a gift and it stays on her kitchen counter -- a great resource for her and her 5 roommates. They don't really want to 'cook' most days, but they do like to eat healthy. Great tips in a fun, accessible format.

Much more than a conventional cookbook, The Anti-Cookbook has something to offer for everyone. Truly holistic in its approach to everything from food choices and preparation to parenting and ethical eating —it is hard to put down. The pair of narrative voices provides a nice counterpoint as they profer family lore, nuggets of practical wisdom, dishes from different ethnic backgrounds, and vivid experiences of raising sons and daughters. Not to mention the recipes—YUM!

The relaxed format —no rigid instructions to follow — should reduce anxiety and encourage creativity in the kitchen for neophytes and food veterans alike.

I love this product; simple, easy, quick, and the results are delicious. All really good stuff but I really got a surprise in the narrative along with the recipes. This is beyond a cook book and yes anti-cookbook name fits.

Thrifty? She recommends you but things like a panini press for quesadillas. Also, goat cheese? Not thrifty. This was more a book about her life with some recipes thrown in. Glad I didn't pay full price.

Great read and recipes are easy to follow. The need for this book is brilliant! What I love the most are: variety, time-saving $, and the simplicity of ingredients used but not sacrificing the flavors. The writers have a lot of validity as season cooks themselves, but like the rest of us normal people, may not be a gourmet chef, or choose to cook for their children otherwise be reported to CPS and of course, it's great for the young adults living apart from their main nest.

This "not a cookbook" is something i wish i had going off to college. It is a smart and healthy way to think about food and enjoy it. I am placing my 3rd order, I have one myself, and sending 2 others to friends.

The Anti-Cookbook has been so helpful as a college student. Often times it's hard to find the time to make a fancy meal or I just really don't know what I can make with the ingredients in my pantry and refrigerator. This cookbook has extremely simple recipes that are not only easy but very delicious, too!
